Why is my website not showing up on ChatGPT

Because ChatGPT is not reading your website. In most local answers it never opens a business site at all, so your pages have nothing to do with whether your name comes up.

We checked this on real businesses in Miami in October 2026. One bakery sits second in Google for "best bakery in Brickell Miami". Another sits fourth. We asked ChatGPT eight versions of that same question, and neither of them was named a single time.

The same pattern repeated everywhere we looked. For five local searches that we had already measured, we pulled the live Google top ten and compared it against the sources ChatGPT actually used. Out of 55 sources, only 12 were in the Google top ten, which is twenty two percent.

So where do the names come from? From the pages that write about businesses rather than belong to them. In our bakery runs ChatGPT read Coral Gables Magazine, The Infatuation, Miami and Beaches, Yelp, Eater and the local city guides. The businesses it named were the ones those pages had already covered.

That changes what you can do about it. Rewriting your homepage, adding keywords, fixing your meta description, all of it is aimed at a reader who is not there. The reader who matters is a model building an answer out of other people's pages.

There is one more thing worth ruling out first, and it takes two minutes. Your site may be closed to the robot that collects pages for ChatGPT answers. It is called OAI-SearchBot, and it is separate from the one people argue about online. Plenty of sites block every AI robot in one line, thinking they are protecting themselves from training, and switch themselves off from recommendations at the same time. Some sites do not block it on purpose at all, their security layer simply treats the robot as suspicious traffic and sends it away.

You can check both in about two minutes. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for a line that says Disallow under OAI-SearchBot. Then open ChatGPT and ask it the question a customer would ask about your kind of business in your town, and see who it names.

If the answer names your competitors and skips you, nothing is broken on your side. You are absent from the pages the model trusts, which is a different job from the one your web developer is doing, and it is the job we do.
