Where AI actually finds local businesses (it's not Yelp, YouTube, or LinkedIn)
We put 1,423 AI citations through our probe database and tallied every domain that surfaced. Yelp came up zero times. So did YouTube. So did LinkedIn. Reddit alone racked up more mentions than the next two platforms put together.
That's not the narrative most owners hear. The standard playbook for AI visibility looks like this: claim your Yelp, pump out YouTube content, flesh out LinkedIn. We wanted to see if that advice actually lines up with what ChatGPT and its cousins cite when a real customer fires off a real question, so we looked.
What we ran
We grabbed every citation from ten local niches across five cities: med spa, hair salon, gym, dentist, chiropractor, optometrist, veterinarian, personal injury lawyer, plumber, auto repair. 1,423 domains total, tracked by which query pulled them up and whether the domain was a known review or listing directory. This isn't a gut feeling. It's a head count.
What actually shows up
Reddit dominated every other domain with sixty-three citations, solo. Zocdoc trailed at twenty-seven. After that, the list is review platforms and local directories most owners couldn't name: bestinhood, threebestrated, expertise.com, healthgrades. Nine hundred and twenty-seven unique domains got cited at least once, and Reddit alone swallowed more of that total than Yelp, YouTube, and LinkedIn combined, because those three swallowed none.
Reddit's presence shifts by niche. In med spa citations, it hits roughly one in thirty. In hair salon citations, it jumps to about one in eleven. But even at the bottom, Reddit still beats three platforms treated as mandatory homework for local businesses chasing AI discovery.
Why the popular advice misses
Yelp, YouTube, and LinkedIn all chase the human thumb-scrolling a feed. An AI answering "best med spa near me" isn't thumbing through anything, it's grabbing text it can quote and a source it can cite. Reddit threads look exactly like that: a real person asking a pointed question, getting specific names back, in plain language, with context the model can lift straight into its response. A Yelp listing is stars and snapshots. A LinkedIn company page is a mission statement. Neither hands the model a sentence worth repeating.
What to do with this
Don't drop Yelp or your social presence, humans still find you that way. But if the target is specifically AI visibility, shifting effort toward Reddit puts you where the citations actually live. That means hunting the threads in your city and niche where people ask the question your business solves, and showing up as a genuine account offering a genuine answer instead of a hit-and-run pitch. It also means checking whether directories like the ones above, the ones no marketing checklist mentions, already list your name, because those are doing the quiet work while the spotlight platforms soak up the attention.
